About the language
Aramaic is a Semitic language close to Arabic, with about 3,000 years of written history. It was the common language of the ancient Near East, and Syriac, the language of the Syriac churches, is one of its forms. About half a million people still speak modern Aramaic dialects in Iraq, Syria and nearby countries.
