About the language
Amazigh (Tamazight) is a group of closely related languages spoken in North Africa for thousands of years. It belongs to the Afroasiatic family, the same large family that includes Arabic. About 25 million people speak it, mostly in Morocco and Algeria.

Writing system
Written in the Tifinagh script from left to right, and also in Latin or Arabic letters.
Quick facts
- Its best-known branches include Kabyle, Tashelhit, Tarifit and Tuareg.
- Amazigh became an official language in Morocco's constitution in 2011 and Algeria's in 2016.
- The Amazigh New Year, Yennayer, falls around 12 or 13 January and is a public holiday in Algeria and Morocco.
- The Tifinagh script has very old roots and is still used by the Tuareg today.
