About the language
Turkish is the most widely spoken of the Turkic languages. It is the official language of Turkey and an official language of Cyprus. About 80 million people speak it natively, and about 90 million in total.

Since 1928 it has been written in the Latin alphabet from left to right; before that it used Arabic letters.

- It is agglutinative: suffixes are added to the end of a word one after another.
- It has vowel harmony, so vowels in suffixes change to match the word.
- It has no grammatical gender; even the pronoun for he and she is the same.
- It contains thousands of Arabic words, many of which came through Ottoman Turkish.
