About this course

This course shows how to use Power BI for statistical analysis of data and for building interactive dashboards that help you make better decisions. It starts with the introduction and downloading the required software, then uploading files and data into the program and working in the data editor over several parts, transforming and editing data, adding new columns, and creating relationships between data tables. After that you move on to the types of analysis: time analysis with a Line Chart, section analysis, geographic analysis with maps, product analysis with a Decomposition Tree, rank analysis, percentages, and spotting outliers with Scatter Charts, then the DAX language and Bookmarks, and finally an interactive dashboard with Power BI Service. It suits analysts, business owners and anyone who works with data, and it needs no previous experience with the program. The course ends with a lesson to download the materials so you can practice on the same files used in the lessons. By the end, you will be able to clean data, analyze it and present it in clear reports and dashboards.

Expected outcomes

  • Master statistical analysis skills using PowerPoint.
  • Create professional interactive reports and dashboards.
  • Understand methods for analyzing temporal and geographical data.
  • Handle data files and develop customized reports.

Statistical Analysis of Data Using Microsoft Power BI

22 lectures
  1. The IntroductionIntroduces data analysis and its importance for decision making and competitive advantage, and presents Power BI as a business intelligence tool with four steps: connecting to data, transforming it, designing visuals, and sharing them.5:56
  2. Required Downloads and ProgramsExplains downloading and installing Power BI Desktop from Microsoft along with the mobile app and Data Gateway, the installation steps, the three views, and that it only accepts work or company emails.11:19
  3. Uploading Files and Data to the ProgramExplains loading data into Power BI Desktop through Get Data from Excel files or SQL Server, selecting and previewing tables, transforming data in Power Query, then Close and Apply to start the analysis.13:41
  4. Data Editor (Part One)Starts explaining Power Query from the Home tab: the Close and Apply options, adding new data sources, changing data types, and fixing a file path error when the file is moved to another folder.10:19
  5. Data Editor (Part Two)Continues the Power Query Home tab: Applied Steps for undoing changes, Choose and Remove Columns, keeping or removing rows, and ascending or descending sorting and clearing it.11:40
  6. Data Editor (Part Three)Explains in Power Query splitting a column by delimiter, character count or position, Group By for aggregation, using the first row as headers, and Replace Values.12:29
  7. Data Editor (Part Four)Explains the difference between Merge Queries, which adds columns from another table through a shared column, and Append Queries, which adds new rows, with an example of updating the analysis automatically by appending a new year's data.8:08
  8. Transforming and Modifying DataExplains the Transform tab in Power Query: reversing rows, filling empty values with Fill Down and Fill Up, Pivot Column and Unpivot Columns to reshape a table, and text formatting.11:23
  9. Adding New Columns to DataExplains the Add Column tab in Power Query: Column From Examples, Custom Column with a formula such as profit margin, Conditional Column, and Index Column.9:52
  10. RelationshipsExplains the three Power BI views: Report View, Data View and Model View, and building relationships between tables through a unique shared column such as an ID, including relationship direction and types.12:02
  11. Questions Before Data Analysis and Purpose of Data AnalysisPresents the questions asked before analyzing data and the types of analysis, such as profit and sales trends, forecasting, customer behavior, geographic analysis and the link between discount and sales, to set the purpose before starting.14:34
  12. Time-Based Analysis - Line ChartExplains time-based analysis by building a Line Chart in Power BI: placing sales and profit on the axes, tooltips, and formatting lines, markers and borders to design the chart.17:31
  13. Category Analysis (Column -Bar) chartsCovers column and bar chart types in Power BI such as stacked and clustered, and how to add data labels, titles, and customize colors and background for each.26:10
  14. Geographical Analysis - MapsExplains how to build a geographical map analysis in Power BI, displaying data by city or country, and using color shading and filters to show sales or profit on the map.13:20
  15. Product Analysis - Decomposition TreeExplains the Decomposition Tree chart in Power BI as a tool to track numbers like sales and profit, breaking them down by category, subcategory, and product, and switching between absolute and relative views.11:53
  16. Segment Analysis - Card Chart - TablesCovers ways to display totals in Power BI using cards, tables, and matrices, and formatting colors and conditions to clearly highlight high or low values.18:44
  17. Up-normality's - Scatter ChartsExplains how to detect outliers in data using a Scatter Chart in Power BI, comparing sales with profit or discount to spot abnormal cases, and using Play Axis to show changes over the years.8:47
  18. Rank AnalysisCovers how to build a rank analysis in Power BI to see how products or categories rank year over year by sales or profit, and display it using a line or ribbon chart.9:59
  19. Percentage AnalysisExplains how to display percentage data in Power BI using stacked column, pie, and donut charts, and how to limit the number of categories to avoid a cluttered chart.7:20
  20. DAX- BookmarksExplains the DAX language in Power BI for creating custom calculations not available by default, such as filtering sales for a specific category, and using Bookmarks to navigate between dashboard pages.13:12
  21. Interactive Dashboard - Power BI Service (Part 1)Covers how to build a complete Power BI dashboard from scratch, adding a title, charts, a search box, and linking Bookmarks to buttons for navigating between different analyses.21:36
  22. Interactive Dashboard - Power BI Service (Part 2)Covers finishing the dashboard build in Power BI and connecting it to the Power BI Service, and how to share the report with others inside the organization and set viewing permissions.20:20
