What you'll learn
- Understand gravity from Newton to Einstein in a simple way
- Learn the meaning of escape velocity, the speed of light, and a light year
- Trace the life of a star from its birth to its death
- Understand how a black hole is born and what the event horizon is
- Learn how scientists have observed and photographed black holes
- Discover gravitational waves, Hawking radiation, and the information paradox
About this course
Have you ever wondered how something can be so heavy that even light cannot escape from it? This course from the "Simplifying Cosmic Physics" series takes you on a calm and enjoyable journey towards the strangest objects in the universe. We start with Newton's apple, escape velocity, and the speed of light, then move on to Einstein and the idea that gravity is a shape of spacetime rather than a force. After that, we experience the life and death of stars: white dwarfs, neutron stars, supernova explosions, and the moment a black hole is born. Then we enter the black hole itself: the event horizon, tidal forces, what a traveler sees at the edge, and rotating black holes. We learn how scientists observed the first black hole, how they captured the image of M87, and how they first detected gravitational waves. We conclude with Hawking radiation and the information paradox. Each lesson explains one idea with images and motion, so you understand and remember it. The course is suitable for anyone who loves space and science, from school and university students to adults, and no background in physics or mathematics is required.
Expected outcomes
- - Explain to others what a black hole is in simple words.
- - Understand space news and new discoveries about black holes.
- - Distinguish between a white dwarf, a neutron star, and a black hole.
- - Have a strong foundation to continue with the rest of the courses in the Cosmic Physics Simplification series.
